Art in Perpetuity

Tues 23rd - Sun 28th August  2016

Private View:  Thurs 25th August  (6pm - 8pm)

This retrospective exhibition is to celebrate the life and art of Don Powell.

Born in Lyme Regis in 1924, Reginald Walter Donald Powell, later known as Don, spent his early years exploring the River Lim, coastline and countryside around Lyme. The majority of his life was spent living on the coast, whether it be Falmouth, Weston-Super-Mare or Weymouth.

Throughout his life Don sketched and painted whenever the opportunity arose. During his working life as an aeronautical engineer, Don found time to belong to art groups and attend life drawing classes as well as studying at the original Falmouth School of Art and St Martins school of Art in London.

Taking early retirement to focus on his art, Don studied for an A Level at Weston College of Art and then a Diploma in Integrated Arts and Design through the University of the West of England, before sadly dying of cancer in February 2002.

Much of Don's artwork explored the relationship of art and music. It has been claimed that all art aspires to the condition of music in which the artist can appeal to his audience directly without being tied to the business of description or imitation.
