'Art is not a mirror.
Art is a translation of that which you do not know.'
Marlene Dumas  2003

The work for this solo show began during a residency in a studio at 44AD. Through close observation, fascinated by faces, fleeting glances and unexpected meetings; Kay added to her collection of drawings and photographs of people round and about the studio.

Her new paintings also include wedding dresses which reflects Kay's interest in why people keep clothes from the past. The work is enhanced by memories and images both real and imagined.

Kay Lewis-Bell graduated from Bath Spa University in 2004. Since then she has worked from her studio at Shave Farm, South Brewham, Somerset. She has exhibited in England and France, including solo and group shows, art fairs and the AWA Open.

'I am a painter and I usually paint women. My work skims a line between painting and drawing. I paint intuitively, working from a memory of a face, rather than a direct representation. The paint and charcoal lead and my stories follow!'
