Artist’s Call out for RIV Arts Trail proposals

Application deadline: Sunday 25 March 2018

The RIV project aims to:

•  Engage Local Communities
•  Establish Collaborative Activities
•  Create A Unique Accessible Arts Trail Situated Along The River Avon
•  Inform Ongoing Research on the History of Flooding in the City of Bath
•  Exhibit The Artworks And Share The Projects Story

44AD and Art at the Heart of the RUH are currently working on a partnership project:
River is the Venue (RIV) with research academics at the University of Bath, funded through the University of Bath Public Engagement Unit. The focus of the research and project is on historical flooding events in Bath and as the project evolves audiences will be exposed to fascinating elements of the River’s history in the City.

Amongst various community workshops and activities, the project will commission a series of public artworks by local artists, resulting in a trail of temporary outside installations/sculptures related to key historical flood sites in the past 200 years; amongst these, we will be marking the 50th anniversary of the Great Flood of 1968.

The artworks will be presented and designed with a view of their accessibility for all. An app/website will be created as an interactive guide and to collect research information, including community stories.

Budget

We have a total budget of £6,000 to commission up to 5 artwork projects, to include:
4 x £750 pop up artwork commissions
1 x £3,000 community led artwork commission
The deadline for proposals is Sun 25 March 2018

Artwork specifications

4 x £750 Pop Up Artwork Commissions
This series of artwork commissions will respond to the history of flooding in the City of Bath and will create the RiV Pop Up arts trail, situated along the River Avon. The RIV arts trail will be showcased alongside the Forest of Imagination festival, to take place 1st - 5th June 2018.
The finished artwork can be of any size and comprise of any medium - sculpture, installation, performance based etc.
Please think about the placement and materials of the artwork, as it will most likely be on display outdoors.
Apart from works of a performative/interactive nature etc. Pop Up artworks would need to be produced and completed by 27th May 2018.

1 x £3,000 Community Led Artwork Commission
This community led commission will respond to the history of flooding in the City of Bath and aim for a sense of completion by October 2018.
The making of this artwork could be collaborative, and would involve some participatory workshops with community groups.
We can offer support liaising with community organisations, as well as some available space for workshops and other initiatives, including Pop Up events.

On the proposal application you will be asked to specify which commission you are applying for and you will be asked to provide some projected costings regarding your artwork/project. Remember to think about materials needed and your time, as once budgets have been allocated, these cannot be changed.
50% of commission budgets will be distributed at the start of the project, with the remainder being paid on completion of the artwork. If more funds are needed for materials etc. (within the allocated budget) throughout the project duration, this can be organised.

Sites and inspiration

Artworks (although not necessarily temporary works in themselves) will be displayed as temporary pop ups alongside other river related public events at venues including Bath Quays.

We have identified some key sites below along the length of River from Henrietta Park to Churchill Bridge which could be responded to.

One area to draw inspiration from is under the foot bridge from Widcombe to the train station which details carved historical charting of flood depths.

Exhibitions, Collaborations and Digital Tech

Artwork documentation / designs / artwork concept models / possible artworks of some form relating to the RiV arts trail and the community led artwork project will be used in RIV project promotion and scheduled exhibitions at 44AD (Nov 2018) and then RUH (Dec 2018)
Opportunities to collaborate and display artwork with Festival of Nature and Forest of Imagination in June are in progress.
