Tracing the invisible lines of connection that weave through families, landscapes, and memory, in Leylines these unseen threads are made tangible through the slow, repetitive labour of hand stitching. Rooted in autobiography, the exhibition unfolds as a tactile and introspective excavation of inherited archives, personal collections and the landscape of the South West. Transforming fleeting, ephemeral moments into tactile acts of remembrance through embroidery and assemblage practices.
Taking its title from the folkloric concept of ley lines, imagined pathways of energy connecting ancient sites, the exhibition considers how these unseen connections can appear across a body of work, linking childhood memories, lived experiences of landscape, and meditative stitch processes. The idea of the ley line holds personal significance for the artist, as the third generation of women in her family to be born along the St Michael's Ley Line, which passes through her home county of Suffolk before continuing through the Marlborough Downs and Avebury Henge. These sites are revisited in the exhibition, recurring images of Wiltshire's white chalk horses and ancient standing stones acting as quiet tributes to family history.
Grounded in personal archive, through the space, collections of photobooth strips taken with friends and family are translated into carefully stitched objects as an act of preservation and care. Held within soft fabric frames, childhood photographs are reimagined as embroidered works, that emphasise intimacy, protection, and the emotional weight of the domestic archive.
Leylines offers a deeply personal yet widely resonant reflection on how memories are carried, preserved, and transformed. Through the slow and tactile language of craft, the exhibition invites visitors to consider the invisible connections that shape identity and belonging.
Sarah Moloney is a recent graduate of Bath Spa University and was awarded the BSU / 44AD Grad residency 2025/26, recipient of a studio space for a year, followed by a solo exhibition sponsored by 44AD.
