Isabel Tanko is a Bath based figurative artist with a specific interest in portraiture and the figure. She primarily works with oil paint, supported by charcoal, pastel, and lino prints creating large scale pieces which engage with themes of masculinity and femininity.
Exploring both her personal relationship to gender in her self-portraits, as well as the way in which masculinity and femininity are shaped by society within her wider practice.
She draws on the tradition of portraiture to create her paintings with much of her work referencing classic motifs such as the reclining figure, or marital portraits altered by contemporary influences, themes, and ways of understanding the body.
