Photography, our once dependable form of evidence, has now become an essential tool of revision, manipulation and misinformation, as billions of images generated everyday fail to depict the world as it really is.
Can photography still hold the capacity to reveal reality and truth?
Can photographic images still produce meaningful insight and elicit trust?
And where do the challenges for photography lie now?
How do we reflect our existence in a world of AI fakery and how can any attempt to record it be trusted for future generations.
PhotoBath, a network of documentary and fine art photographers from the UK and Europe, returns with a new exhibition TRUTH DECAY. Curated by four independent judges, this exhibition provides a journey through stories that question our times and the place of photography in it. The photographers have engaged with competing notions of truth, propaganda, ideology, deception, authenticity, censorship and the reliability of memory and evidence. The photographs range from the conceptual to the tender, and from standout images to photo series.
The judges are:
Benedict Brain is a UK-based photographer, writer and author. His practice spans personal projects, editorial assignments, writing about photography and teaching through workshops and enrichment programmes. An award-winning journalist, he also writes a monthly column, The Art of Seeing.
Arran Hodgson is Director of Fringe Arts Bath (FaB), a supportive organisation for early-career artists and creatives. He serves as Curriculum Manager for Creative Arts at Bath College and brings over 17 years of teaching experience to the role. He leads the development and delivery of a range of creative programmes.
Harry Borden is a British portrait photographer based in London. His subjects have included world famous celebrities, musicians, actors, filmmakers and politicians. Examples of Harry's work are held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London and National Portrait Gallery, Australia.
