This year, 44AD has collaborated with guest curator Nina Jesih to produce our annual Summer Show: eighthwonder 2019.

The theme for eighthwonder 2019 is muse, which has inspired an exciting selection of paintings, print, photography, video and 3D artworks on display, from regional and international artists.

“The muses are ghosts, and sometimes they come uninvited.” Stephen King, Bag of Bones

Gracing the walls of gallery spaces, offices and households, the finished artwork engages the audience. However, what is it that comes before that?
Since ancient times, artists have spoken about their need for inspiration, to find the spark thatstokes their creative flame.
But who or what sparks artists today?

Throughout the duration of the exhibition please feel welcome to join us for the schedule of associated events (all free admission):

Thursday 8th August 6pm - 8pm

Remember to put the 8th of the 8th into your diaries and join us for 44AD’s Open Summer Show Party!

Tuesday 13th August - 6pm

Jessica Otterwell will give a short talk surrounding muses.
For years, acclaimed filmmaker Gus Van Sant was inspired to create by one of the rising stars of his time, actor River Phoenix. This talk will delve into the photography, prose and of course, the films that were a product of one of the most creative relationships of the early 1990s. Jessica graduated with a BA (Hons) in Film and Screen Studies with Creative Writing from Bath Spa University. Her writing focuses on gender identity and sexuality within independent cinema.
