The Art of Communication: some keywords and ideas
Democracy. Human Rights. Freedom of Expression. Principles and Values. Acceptance. Tolerance and Respect. Understanding. Sports - The Commonwealth Games.
The modern Commonwealth was established in 1949 as an association of free and equal sovereign states which had been part of the British Empire but were now independent and, in the case of India and Pakistan, on the verge of becoming Republics. There are now 53 member states, with a combined population of 2.2 billion (approximately 30% of the world's population).
The Commonwealth is an association of governments and peoples, built around shared language, institutions, challenges, aspirations and values. Unlike most other international associations, the Commonwealth works on a consensus model and membership is voluntary, predicated primarily on a country’s commitment to upholding shared values and principles, including the protection and promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
Advances in Technology
The Commonwealth has networks all over the world. From Telegram to Instagram, how we communicate today has vastly developed and expanded over the last 70 years since the modern Commonwealth was established.
Progress and Equal Rights
Did you know that in 1894 the Royal Commonwealth Council invited a woman to read a paper at an Institute meeting for the first time, causing such a stir that an editorial appeared in The Times.
Sports
Sport underpins the unique connections and friendships which bring together a third of the world’s population as citizens of the nations and territories of the Commonwealth. For more than eight decades the Commonwealth Games has united Commonwealth athletes, citizens and communities through the transformative and connecting power of sport.
Many sportspeople representing different countries are trained at The University of Bath Sports Village (a super 17 medals were won between them at the 2018 games).
The 2022 Commonwealth Games will take place in the UK, with Birmingham selected as the host city. Birmingham 2022 is set for the largest ever female and para-sport programme in Commonwealth Games history.
