You are invited to join the Royal Commonwealth Society (Bath and District Branch) at the opening of it’s Artists’ Prize and Exhibition: The Art of Communication.
This exciting inaugural launch event will take place at 44AD artspace in the centre of Bath on Thursday 5th March 2020 (6pm - 8pm).

The Art of Communication exhibition was open to submission entries from all artists (school age to professional) living in Bath and North East Somerset. The high standard and imagination of the selected artworks on show is testament to the talent of our local artists, all responding to the title theme. This exhibition is also a celebration of the Royal Commonwealth Society (Bath and District Branch) - it’s values, and the support it gives to our local community.

The Royal Commonwealth Society (Bath and District Branch) is delighted to welcome Michael Eavis CBE (Godfather of Glastonbury!) to 44AD to award the Art Prize and Exhibition Prizes at the prize giving ceremony.

Young Artists’ prize

Art materials and an award will be given to 1st and 2nd prize winners of each category. The 1st prize winner of the 16 - 18 yrs category will also be awarded the Schools Exhibition prize (to be held at 44AD).

All first prize winners will be invited to attend a Buffet Reception with the Mayor of Bath in the Mayor’s Parlour.

Young Artists’ Prize category judges

Andrew Grant
Andrew Grant

Andrew is a landscape architect whose work explores the connection between people and nature. He started his company, Grant Associates, in 1997 which has grown into an international design studio with offices in Bath and Singapore. In 2012 he was awarded the title of RSA Royal Designer for Industry in recognition of his pioneering global work in landscape architecture such as the multi award winning Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.

Andrew is also co-founder of the pop up festival Forest of Imagination which engages the wider community of Bath in the re-imagining of city spaces and our relationship with nature in the city.

Dr Penny Hay is an artist and educator. Penny is Research Fellow, Centre for Cultural and Creative Industries, Senior Lecturer in Arts Education, Bath Spa University, Visiting Lecturer at Plymouth College of Art, and Director of Research, House of Imagination (formerly 5x5x5=creativity).

Signature projects include School Without Walls, House of Imagination and Forest of Imagination. Penny’s doctoral research focused on how we support children’s learning identity as artists. Penny is a member of the RSA Innovative Education Network, Crafts Council Learning Advisory Group, and Co-Investigator on the AHRC Global Challenges Research project ‘Rethinking Waste’ in Mumbai.

Debbie Hillyerd
Debbie Hillyerd

Debbie is the Director of Education at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Debbie joined Hauser & Wirth Somerset from Bath Spa University where she worked as an Associate Lecturer teaching Critical Studies, Fine Art and Curatorial Practice. Debbie also taught Visual Culture and Fine Art at the University of West of England, Bristol, Brighton and Loughborough University. In addition to over twenty years experience as Academic Lecturer in UK universities, Debbie has written on artist’s practice and provided consultancy to many other institutions across the education sector. Since its launch in 2014, Hauser & Wirth Somerset has developed a rich and varied education programme, providing opportunities for individuals, schools, special interest groups, families and outreach work, as well as building meaningful partnerships with public, private, community and charitable organisations.

Dr Chris Stephens
Dr Chris Stephens

Dr Chris Stephens is the Director of The Holburne Museum in Bath. One of the foremost scholars of 20th century British art and the art of St Ives, Dr Stephens previous role was Head of Displays and Lead Curator of Modern British Art at Tate Britain. He curated the major 2017 David Hockney retrospective at Tate Britain, Centre Pompidou, Paris & Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Other major exhibitions he has curated at Tate Britain include Barbara Hepworth: Sculpture for a Modern World (2015), Picasso and Modern British Art (2012), and Henry Moore (2010). He played a key role in the major development of Tate Britain in 2013 and the accompanying rehang of the entire collection. More recently, Dr Stephens has received critical acclaim for the curation of Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy years exhibition, which is currently on show at The Holburne Museum.
